"From Waste to Resource" -Start Composting Today

by Mahendra Saywack in With an ever-increasing population, how can we maximise resource efficiency to meet our growing needs?

As part of my final year research project for my University, I collected over 211 kg of vegetable wastes from market sites around the city. Using earthworms and cow manure, I successfully processed this large volume of waste into a useful product called vermicompost over a 45 day period. At the end of my experiment, the initial mass of waste was reduced to 45 kg. As the world's population continues to grow at alarming rates, we can all make a difference, starting right in our homes. I was able to transform a waste material into an agriculturally useful and environmentally friendly resource and so can you. By composting your kitchen waste you're not only reducing the amount of waste required for disposal but at the same time you're producing a useful organic fertiliser which in turn can reduce the world's dependency on chemical fertilisers and pesticides. I don't understand how this picture has a high score.

I understand the idea of the picture and the action it represents, and I find it very interesting. But I think a picture should have some artistic value or beauty, or it must communicate something, a personal view on something.
And I think this picture has none of these characteristics, it hasn't qualities to be the most voted. And especially when there are amazing photos voted with scores of 1 ... I do not understand.
And I repeat, the action that represents the picture is very interesting, but not enough with this.

The competition should be to reconsider, and that the jury should consider all the pictures and not the most votes.

I suggest you and Danar read the descriptions above the pictures and if that's not clear enough to the two of you then go and read my essay which discusses extensively my personal research. Your point makes no sense "I think a picture should have some artistic value or beauty, or it must communicate something, a personal view on something.".. This picture artistic, it communicates a lot that can be done with organic waste and it's a photo taken during my person research for my University's thesis. 

I cannot answer why other photos have not received more votes. MY entry was uploaded very early in this competition hence the page its located on. The more recent pictures are on the first pages. I have a lot of support hence my votes. Well I hope the jury hears your plead I do not mind having them consider all the pictures, but then that would be unfair since the first edition followed this same format.

28 votes for this poor photo??? are you kidding me? There are at least 7 photos 10 times better than this and some of them only got 2-3 votes. How is this possible??



Is the purpose of this contest to see who gets the most votes? In that case, I'll post and essay about Marilyn Monroe and ask all my friends to vote me, or a photo of Humphrey Bogart and do the same thing.



The best way to decide if a work is good and worth winning the competition is either by judging the comments of other contestants to that work or by analysing each work individually. There are not so many esays and photos, the organizers have enough time to judge.



How come you got like 16 or 17 votes in the first days of the competition, for your essay? It is clear that there is some fair play missing here...So I think we all should talk to the organizers and ask them to forget about the present system--the one who gets the most votes wins. This is exactly how the previous essay competition was won.

Ok well critique as you wish, its an honour :). The more you comment on my entries the more popular you're giving me. Bad publicity or good publicity is still publicity, so you're actually doing me a favour by increasing the number of comments on my entries. 

Earlier you alluded to the fact that the winner was chosen based on VOTES... hear's what, do me a big favour and go review last years contestants and you will see for yourself that the person with the most votes for the video contest got 9 votes and about 4 comments I think. HOWEVER THE WINNER WAS SELECTED AND SHE GOT 6 VOTES...OMGGGG!!!!! is this contradicting your theory that votes determine the winner? Ya I think so. Dude, you need to relax. If votes really determined the winner then by all means the person with the most votes for the video supposed to win but DIDNT...so what you're speculating based on last years contest was a mere coincidence that the person with most votes for picture won....

I just like to enter competitions for the fun of it, not to win (necessarily).Why are you bringing up someone else's work when the subject of our conversation was related to the number of votes? Regarding the winner from July, please, please, read that essay and at least a few others and make a judgement for yourself if what I said was just my opinion...Why are you getting the impression of hate. I merely stated my personal opinion, that your photo was not good, in relation to at least a few others, which got unbelievably few votes.

It is a lie that you entered this competition very early--your essay was posted along with most of the other contributions, and I remember clearly that you got 16 votes from the firt 2-3 days--the administrator of this site can confirm...By the way--I joined on the same day as you--in the sense that both our entries were posted on the same day--if you remember-this was a short time ago, in November--and the competition started in August.


I dont care about winning, I have my own laptop and my own photo camera, I just want this competition to be fair to the other competitiors, at least in principle.


All I'm saying is that I dont understand how come some undisputably really good photos got so few votes, and some obviously poor entries got so many votes...

so i can see you want to take the photo and the essay competition prize, why? do you think you are so good? just because you have implemnted one method of fertilerz? you think you can monopolize the discussion regarding the earth and the environemnt and judge all the other photos or the other essay? it seems to me you have no team player traits. your compost is an interesting idea, but that is it, we need more than reciclying just the garbage, we need more implication in using the green technology, to get to people real energy at no cost, we need solutions, not one solution that will win. think about it.

Marina, I do not think I'm so

Marina, I do not think I'm so good as you put it. Please don't get me wrong but I'm just proud that I was able to successfully implement one of the many solutions on my own. I am well aware that other solutions exist but as the first paragraph in my essay noted, I chose to emphasize specifically on waste management because I see the linkage between population growth and waste generation. In the context of developing countries like Guyana, vermicomposting is relevant! Maybe you do not see the need for it where you live but I have. Why suggest other solutions that are not possible in the socio-economic status of many developing countries? What use would that serve. If we want to suggest solutions, I don't think we need to find hundreds of solutions, we just need to find a few that actually work and are actually relevant. 

I urge you to read my essay because vermicomposting is NOT JUST ABOUT RECYCLING THE GARBAGE as you put it, vermicomposting reduces the amount of waste that is required for disposal and at the same time it creates an agriculturally useful and environmentally safe organic fertiliser.

We often read about solutions that will conserve energy, but how many of us can say that we have implemented one of those very solutions in our own lives? This picture is more than just earthworms in my hands, it shows my personal research in vermicomposting. I was able to transform a waste product (vegetable waste) into agriculturally useful and environmentally safe organic fertiliser using earthworms to decompose the waste for FREE!!. This is an energy efficient solution, since it only required raw materials and local labour. Acquiring the raw materials was not a problem since the market vendors were grateful in giving the waste instead of having it discarded into landfills. I was able to produce this organic fertiliser in just 45 days. I have posted the methodology I used to prepare the compost. If you are interested in making your own compost, start today!

Conducting the Vermicomposting Experiment

The site for the experiment was at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Guyana; Turkeyen Campus. Both the earthworms and cow manure required were obtained from Saint Stanislaus College Farm, while the vegetable waste was collected from market sites. The production of vermicompost followed closely the procedure outlined by Ansari (2009)4.

 Bed Construction of the Vermicompost Tank

The tank system was used for this experiment. The site had three (3) vermiculture tanks of dimensions 1.9 m (length), 1.5 m (width) and 1 m (depth) constructed from concrete of which one (1) was used for this experiment (See Figures 1-4 in Appendix 1); In one of the tanks, a bottom layer of crushed stones (4 cm) was added followed by a layer of white sand (4 cm) and loam soil (4 cm). These layers were then moistened with water but not completely soaked; A layer of fresh vegetable waste (35kg) was then placed over the foundation followed by dried cow dung (40kg); Five hundred (500) large Eisenia fetida (Red Worms) were then released into the tank; The unit was then sprinkled with water to keep the contents moist so that the earthworms would have a suitable habitat to live and multiply; The tank was then covered with an opaque polythene sheet so as to prevent rodents and birds from attacking the earthworms as well as to exclude light since earthworms prefer darkness.

Biodung Precomposting and Vermicomposting

A zinc sheet was used as the base for the biodung precomposting process; One hundred and sixty-one kilograms (161 kg) of fresh plant based residue (vegetable waste) and fifty kilograms (50 kg) of dried cow dung were used to prepare the precompost; The plant residue were deposited in layers on the zinc sheet, with cow dung slurry being soaked after each layer; The heap was then soaked with a substantial quantity of cow dung slurry after reaching a height of 0.91 meters and covered with a polythene sheet; The biodung precompost process lasted for fifteen (15) days. Temperature readings were recorded every five (5) days and the precompost was turned and watered after the tenth day; At the end of fifteen (15) days the precompost was harvested and weighed noting the conversion rate; The biodung precompost was then transferred into the prepared tank (See Section 3.1.2) in which the earthworms further degraded the waste and produced vermicompost over a period of 45 days; The vermibed was moistened every three (3) days by sprinkling water over it. Temperature readings were also recorded every five (5) days during the vermicomposting process.

 Harvesting the Compost

After forty-five (45) days the vermicompost was carefully harvested so as to remove only the compost and not the soil in the tank. All earthworms were then returned to the surrounding soil; The moisture content and weight of the harvested vermicompost were then determined. The vermicompost was subsequently spread on a polythene sheet and air dried for two (2) days; The dried vermicompost was then weighed again and moisture content was determined;

 

The compost was then sifted using a sieve size of 5 mm and packaged into zip lock bags and stored in a cool dark place; Samples were taken to GuySuCo Laboratory for elemental analysis of N, P, K, Mg and Ca. The vermicompost was then used for growing pak choi.
