Biography
My name is Jayne Du. I am from California. I earned my Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley on the subjects of Political Economy and Development. After graduating, I briefly worked as an English teacher in South Korea. While traveling Asia, I begun to notice the nuances behind the issues of environment, economic growth and the role local/institutional knowledge plays in engendering values that unite both. After Korea, I proceeded to earn my MSc degree at the University College London in Geography under the program Environment, Science and Society, where I was introduced to the problems related to climate change. I wrote a dissertation on Sustainability and Materiality, using Organic-labeling in London as a case study. After London, I moved to Marseilles, France where I worked with the World Water Council. There I observed the space in which actors working to achieve sustainable supply of water services struggle to influence policy to secure the health and safety of those living at or below the poverty line. Collectively, these experiences have turned me into an individual, passionate about the causes I have witnessed enough to consider myself as an environmentalist in a qualitative sense of the word. However, ever more like an optimistic and idealistic young American, I also believe that the answers to our current woes lie in uncovering what has been previously unrecognized. Despite what we see in front of us today, I hold tremendous hope that things to come especially as our societies witness accelerating trends in social enterprise, corporate responsibility and leaps in information technology.
